Don’t Risk a Dodgy Painter

Tips to finding the right painter!

It’s  true. A professional painter will save you a lot of time and money because very simply the job is done right, first time around.

But with so many people calling themselves “professional painters”, how do you find the right one?

And how do you make sure you don’t get caught out by a dodgy painter?

Check out our latest tips.

  1. Engage a painter that has been in business for at least 2 years

A dodgy painter probably hasn’t been in business for very long or could be opening and closing multiple businesses.

That’s why it’s important to establish how long the painter has been successfully operating the same business. The longer the better and for at least two years is a reasonable guide.

  1.    Who is doing the painting job?

Some painters may sub-contract their paint jobs to other painters and this may be risky. Others may use low cost inexperienced staff.

Ask the painter if they have employees or use subcontractors.

Find out exactly who will be doing the paint job and get assurance it is someone with solid experience.

  1.   Are they licensed?

Licensing requirements do vary by state in Australia so it’s important you find out if they need one and have one.

For example in NSW, a painter only needs a licence for jobs more than $5,000 in value. As a result you need to keep an eye out for “dodgy” painters offering their services for jobs below this value.

From our experience, professional and experienced painters will always have a licence and also carry appropriate public liability insurances. Someone without these is perhaps not experienced or professional – and that’s a big red flag.
