How to Develop Your Housekeeping Skills

Spending more time at home? You may need this

A lot of home owners claim they don’t have much in the way of housekeeping skills, and they are probably telling the truth. The problem with such claims, however, is that they are far too often used as an excuse to not do anything around the house anymore.

Whether you like it or not, your home needs to be put in order. So what if you aren’t really any good at cleaning and organisation? Every single skill can be developed over time with practice, and housekeeping skills are no exception.

Housekeeping is very much like our own muscles: we need to work them out to become bigger and stronger. That being said, here are some tips that may just help you develop your housekeeping skills.

Develop your housekeeping skills

1. Accept that it can get real tough, but be positive about it

The fact that you’re reading this post means you already know that it’s not going to be easy, but you’re going to do it anyway. Tell yourself that no matter how difficult it can get, you are going to improve and you are going to get stronger and better at this whole cleaning and organisation thing. There is no substitute for positive thinking, all the way.

2. Start small

Diving head-first into big cleaning and organisation tasks like getting rid of all the clutter in your home or organising your entire wardrobe in one day can get overwhelming. If you’re a total newbie at cleaning and organisation, it is recommended that you start with something really small, like wiping the kitchen counter or making your bed in the morning. You can even start with putting your clothes away instead of just leaving them on the floor. Over time, you will be comfortable enough with these simple cleaning and organisation tasks to move on to bigger and tougher ones.

3. Make cleaning and organisation a habit

Many among us who don’t really have a knack for cleaning and organisation tend to let a lot of time pass and wait until we can’t stand the look (and in some cases, smell) of our home anymore before we decide to do some furious housekeeping. With this routine, our homes tend to look pristine one day, then look like a total pigsty a couple of weeks later.

To make your home stay clean and organised every single day, you need to make a habit out of both. You need to get used to the idea of doing some cleaning or organising task day in and day out, even when they’re just small ones like cleaning the toilet bowl or dusting off your bookshelves.

4. Make things simpler

Throughout history, humans have always come up with ways to make everything they do simpler. The same thing applies to housekeeping. For instance, if you have the habit of cleaning the sink with a rag and a cleanser but you don’t like the part where you have to launder and rinse that rag, then use disposable wipes instead. Or if you hate sweeping the floor with a broom, buy a vacuum cleaner and you’ll be better for it. Anything that makes cleaning and organisation easier for you is always good.

5. Move from one task to another, eventually

Let’s say that you have already made it a habit to keep your kitchen clean and organised day in and day out. You should never stop at this, and keep going instead. Decide what you want to do next, and make it a habit as well, and so on and so forth. As always, keep your workload at a manageable level. Keeping your house clean and organised, after all, is not a race.

6. Enjoy the results

As long as you keep on working your housekeeping muscle, there will always be progress made. Stop and take stock of that progress, and give yourself a pat in the back for a job well done. You know you’ve gotten the best results when you start to do housekeeping tasks automatically, without thinking about it. When cleaning and organisation is no longer such a big deal to you, you know you have already managed to develop your housekeeping skills.
