In most homes, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms, not only being used as a place to eat but also as an area for the family to gather and spend time together. If you are thinking about kitchen renovations in Sydney, you will find that it is a room that needs more licenced tradesmen to get the job done.
Unless you are planning on your kitchen renovation being a major do it yourself project, you will have to check out some licenced North Shore builders and find one to oversee the project. You may also need to find:
- Licenced cabinetmakers to build your kitchen cabinets
- Registered or licenced workers to install the new cabinets
- A licenced plumber to install your dishwasher and sink
- A licenced electrician for all wiring including appliances and lighting
- If you are planning to have any gas appliances, you will also need a licenced gas fitter
Additionally, you may need to hire a floor specialist, tiler and painter.
Kitchen Specialist Licensing
The above list is a representation of the complexity of a kitchen renovation, and the number of professional tradies you may need to hire to complete a working kitchen. However, unless you plan to do most of the work yourself, you will not have to worry about hiring all of the different tradesmen. Simply hire a good local builder who specialises in kitchens and has a contractor’s licence. He or she will then subcontract the work that they cannot do and hire the appropriate tradies. Nonetheless, it is a good idea to educate yourself about the kitchen licensing laws and regulations in your particular area.
NSW Fair Trading
NSW Fair Trading oversees all home building and improvement trades in the New South Wales area. Kitchens fall under the umbrella of the building group and if you hire anyone to do work that is valued at more than $1,000, they must have a builder’s licence.
Additionally, in NSW any builder performing kitchen renovations must hold a special trade licence, and in order to qualify for that licence the applicant must have qualifications from each of these groups.
- Group A – An existing NSW trade licence in joinery, carpentry, wall & floor tiling, or plumbing. Alternatively, certificate III level training in a trade related to the work they do.
- Group B – Completion of a selection of ‘units of competency’ and/or completion of related TAFE certificate courses.
This type of licence only authorises the holder to carry out the work they have received training in. For example, a licenced electrician may have a TAFE certificate IV that allows them to acquire a limited licence to install plumbing in your kitchen.
Additionally, a kitchen renovation company or builder must have a contractor’s licence, and anyone supervising work must have a building supervisor’s licence.
