Choosing the Right Removalist

Moving house is a stressful experience and almost everyone will have a horror story about at least one bad move they have had in their lifetime. However, moving does not have to be a negative experience if you hire a good local removalist. An experienced, qualified removalist knows how stressful a move is, and will take care of things to eliminate as much of the stress as possible, and often save you both money and time. However, it is important that you don’t hire the first removalist you find, but do some research to find the one that most suits your needs.

Ask Around

Almost everyone has moved at least once in their adult life, so ask family, friends, and neighbours to see if anyone has any recommendations. Asking people for a recommended removalist helps to take a lot of the guesswork out of trying to find one.

Plan Ahead

When asking for a quote, you will get one that is much more accurate if you can tell the removalist a little about the property you are moving to, information such as access and stairs can make a huge difference in the cost. Additionally, remember that obtaining a quote often takes a few weeks, so make sure you begin looking for a removalist in plenty of time.

Ask a Lot of Questions

When you have received a quote, you should ask the removalist questions regarding their service. Some of the things you should ask include:

  • Does the quote include supplies like tape and boxes? If it does not, you will have to collect a number of different sized boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, polystyrene peanuts, narrow adhesive and packing tape.
  • Do you pack my things for me, or do I have to do it? Many removalists offer a packing service, which can either be quoted with your original quote or on an hourly basis.
  • Is insurance included? Did you know that under Australian law, removalists are not required to have insurance? Nor do they have to be officially accredited or qualified. Most of the time, if you do your own packing the removalists will not cover any damage. If this is the case, or if insurance is not included, check with your regular home insurance to see if your things are covered during a move. If not, you may want to take out a transit policy, which is something a good removalist can help you with.
  • Do you have regular staff? This may not seem important, but if a company doesn’t have regular staff and hires casual labourers, you may not get the best service.

Get Things in Writing

Once you have found the removalist you want to use, make sure that you get everything in writing so that you can make sure there are no hidden costs. Make sure you read the small print to ensure you are not hit with any surprises on moving day.

Do You Have Important Items

If you have precious or important items, make sure that your removalist knows, and that they are equipped to handle antiques, collectibles, and other precious items.
