Tradesmen Tips When Renovating Your Home

Aim For The Best Home Renovation Experience

Home renovations are just as good and successful as you plan them to be. Want to make sure that everything goes smoothly and stays on budget? One of the most important elements in my mind, is managing your tradesmen well and excellent planning. These can make or break your renovation.

Check out our following tips!

Make Home Renovation Decisions Fast

Plan your renovation ahead of time. The best way to ensure that everything goes smoothly is that if you made all decisions before proceeding with the project. Talk to a builder so that he or she can walk you through all possible situations. At the very least, outline what you want to happen should any of the scenarios come up. Often, indecisiveness can cause unnecessary and costly delays.

For instance, think about what you want painted, wired and connected (electric and water) among others. You might need to order items ahead of time. This gives your hired tradesman a window of time to order items before the actual work.

Remember that even the slightest delays in home renovation can balloon into big problems.

Schedule All Renovation Activities

This goes in line with fast decision making. Prepare a schedule including the estimated time of completion for each work you want. Talk with your builder, electrician, plumber, interior designer and other tradesmen and find out how long each aspect of the home renovation will take for their part. There may be dependances on one trade job to another e.g. you may need your new flooring replaced in the kitchen before you install the kitchen cabinets. Communicate between the various tradesmen to line up schedules is crucial.

Let the Builder Buy the Materials

It may seem like a good idea to purchase the materials directly to save costs but this may cause more trouble in the future. Builders often have a markup on materials but they also usually get items on a discounted price. Even with the markup, it is likely you will pay the same price. Builders can also guarantee the quality of materials.

Deciding on Addition Versus Total Overhaul

It is best to discuss with your tradesmen how far to go with a project and assess if you can make do with minor fixes compared to a complete overhaul. There are some properties better transformed from scratch than putting more cost into repairs. Check the property’s foundation, insulation and other fixtures to see if your planned changes are compatible with the existing layout. If not, discuss options with a professional like a builder, architect or home designer.
